January 31: Flash Fiction Challenge
They sat on the beach and watched the ocean waves against the setting sun.
“So this is it?” she asked.
“Yeah, everything’s set,” he answered. “I’ll stay at a friend’s place while I look for a new job. Shouldn’t take long.”
She looked over at him. “Really wish you could stay,” she pleaded.
“So do I,” he said regretfully, “but I just can’t make it here.”
“Gonna miss you.”
Sorrow came over him. “Gonna miss you too.”
He saw a high wave crash into the rocks, send mist into the air, and watched drops of water fall to earth.

At least they are parting amicably. That keeps the possibility a future reunion alive.

Exactly, I also attempted to give the impression that outside forces were pushing him away.

When those life forces hit hard, it’s futile to resist. Water wears down rock. Great use of natural elements to amplify the unfolding conversation and situation.
