He sped along the highway as he left his home town. All that shaped and influenced him as a person, and everyone he knew, faded into the background as he drove ahead. He was looking forward to the new life he was anticipating in a city unknown. He didn’t know where he was going, but everything he was leaving behind, the good times and the bad, was burned into his memory.
His home town made one last appearance in the rear view mirror before it disappeared behind the horizon forever, but he was only looking at the road ahead.
Sounds like he’s making a clean break, and ready for what next. I like that last line about the reflection going unviewed.

Thank you, Charli! That was the effect I was going for, and it was loosely based on a real life experience.

Thank you, Frances! Perhaps I can expand this theme into a bigger work.

The ending of my novel is similar to the one in this story, but I also plan on writing another novel in which the ending will be even more similar. A man will go on an accidental adventure in the AZ desert, then return home when his work is done.

Actually I do have a page on my site for my novel, it has a synopsis then links to all the chapters. Still working on it but good enough to share. It is on my site menu, but I’m not sure if menu appears on everyone’s screens.
