(A 99 word flash fiction piece prompted by Carrot Ranch. Subject: Day of the Dead.)
October 31: Flash Fiction Challenge
The ancestors made their annual visit during the time between fall and winter to be among the living. As they commiserated with their living relatives and listened to their prayers, they were dismayed by the destructive tendencies of some people, and feared that humanity would bring about its own doom. But some ancestors remembered that humanity almost ended many times before during its long evolution, and people were facing only the latest of a long chain of ordeals to test humanity’s mettle and make them stronger.
The people, most barely aware of the forces around them, pressed on ahead.

I like this idea of guidance from those who have gone on before, and the remembering that each generations needs to find strength.
