Second Short Movie Challenges

My latest short movie project is a comedy titled Office Supplies. It is a story about an office worker looking for a certain office supply, but in his search discovers that his co-workers are insane. Movie has five speaking roles, and so far I have four actors but the fifth role will be the hardest to cast because he has to be both skilled comedically and have a zany personality. I’m imaging him to be a cross between the two late comedians Rip Taylor and Kevin Meaney so he needs to be manic, over the top, but still fit into an office workplace setting.

However that can all change depending on available talent, I might even be surprised by a new approach to the character. Finding such a skilled actor is turning out to be a challenge I because it requires a natural ability that can’t be learned. A lot actors may have the willingness to tackle such a character, but not all can pull it off.

As tough as the casting has been the biggest challenge so far has been finding a shooting location. What I need is an office with cubicles, like the one in the cover image for this post. Sounds easy, but it isn’t when you don’t know of any available office space or where to find one. I tried talking to some location scouts and got some helpful advice, and even some leads from one kind scout, but this search is going to require me to do most of the heavy lifting. Someone else I talked with suggested a commercial property management company because a lot of office space became available during the pandemic. Another scout said I should ask everyone I know to see who knows of available office space, unfortunately I don’t know a lot of people anymore. 😁

This must be the sophomore jinx, the bane of the one hit wonder who can’t repeat. I may be down in the valley right now, but with patience and persistence I’ll climb back up to the mountaintop and find my fifth actor and filming location.
