99 Word Prompt: Journey Home

(Flash fiction piece prompted by Carrot Ranch. I took the theme of journey home and made it a metaphor for the final journey everyone has to make, hence the unusually somber tone of this short fiction piece. Link below.)

He recalled his last visit to the doctor’s office and getting the bad news; terminal, three to four months at the most. He then looked outside the train window as he approached his destination and noticed the old landscape as well as new sights. He reflected on how it could be his last time seeing the once familiar surroundings, and thought of the last goodbyes he’d be saying to the people left in his life.

The train pulled into the station. He prepared himself to see his awaiting family, some not seen in years, for his final journey home.

    1. Thank you, Pat! I haven’t received the usual number of visits or comments on this story, no doubt because of the subject matter, so that means a lot to me. Death is not an easy thing to think about, but I believe you have to make peace with death in order to appreciate life.
